Cottam’s Rio Grande Rafting

Very Personalized Experience

We did a morning 1/2 day bike trip on the Rift Trail and the afternoon funyacking down the Rio Grande, class I-III rapids. Cottam’s made an exception to take us on the bike tour as there is a minimum of four people. Ask for Josh if you go there…he’s very knowledgeable about the geography and history of the Rio Grande and the Gorge. This trail has immense and vast overlooks with an unending variety of kodak moments in the 7-8 mile loop. You will want to stop at several points along the way. Just follow the leader to the “A” spot for picture taking. The trail is not too strenuous with a few switchbacks and double trails on the return with a long, slight incline that even beginners should handle without a problem.

After biking, we were treated to a huge assortment of lunch meats, veggies, and fresh baked bread along with all of the accompanying items you can think of. Fun to watch others go down the river while you’re re-nourishing for round two of an active day.

The afternoon brought a fun, 5.8 mile river adventure in class I-III rapids down the Rio Grande River. After all the usual safety checks, we set off in a funyak, which is an inflatable kayak. For those that have done rafting in groups, this is definitely one to challenge your limits and more exhilarating, particularly if the river is down as it was in mid June. Our guide, Jamie was fun, knowledgeable and patient as we wound our way down the river. The morning guide (Josh) took our camera and grabbed some amazing shots as we navigated the rapids. Very cool!

The tour starts about 20-25 minutes outside of Taos. Be sure to stop in their shop in downtown Taos if you’re there. They have some really cool items. Don’t forget the T-Shirt that has the names of all of the rapids on it.There are many choices in the Taos area for river adventures. They were the only company I found that had the bike and river combo. I can’t recommend this group highly enough as they go out of their way to ensure you have a memorable time.
